The PermaSense Consortium

Field Sites

Currently, PermaSense has three main field sites in the Swiss Alps, on Jungfraujoch, on the Hoernli ridge of the Matterhorn and in the Matter valley above Herbriggen/Randa as well as one in France, on the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix.

The Jungfraujoch site is situated near the research station and accessible by the Jungfraujoch railway all year around. Consequently, this site was primarily used to gather first experience with wireless sensing in high-alpine environments. The Matterhorn and Matter valley locations are more remote requiring either a long climb or a helicopter and demonstrates the full capabilities of the PermaSense systems.

All field sites have direct connectivity to the internet. In the case of Jungfraujoch network access provided by the Swiss research network SWITCH. In the Matter valley we are operating a WLAN backbone with relay stations at the Klein Matterhorn and on top of Grossgufer/Randa.  Network access is provided by the Zermatt Bergbahnen AG using their fibre optic infrastructure.

Apart from these sites PermaSense is also actively collaborating at other field sites: Thur river restoration (CCES RECORD), Rhoneglacier (ETHZ VAW), Randa rockslide, Randa and Matterhorn L2-GPS Monitoring (all CCES COGEAR) and air quality monitoring stations mounted on a fleet of public transport vehicles in the city of Zurich (nano-tera.ch OpenSense).

Online Network Status and Sensor Data

PermaSense makes all data from it's research activities publicly available. Both sensor network specific as well as environmental sensor data can be accessed online using our GSN data portal: http://data.permasense.ch A short inventory of the available sensors is listed under each field site here. See the Data Access page for further instructions on how to access this data.
